We are a unique Mountain Oasis, often referred to as a Norman Rockwell kind of place.
Gently tucked into the Appalachian Mountains, we are in between the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. We are in the middle of places, but at least an hour from most. We have a small population of 33,373 folks sprinkled out over 534 square miles. Our homes & families are spread out all over these mountain tops and river valleys, tucked into the most beautiful hollers & surrounded by nature.
In Yancey & Mitchell County we have the following small communities...
Burnsville , Spruce Pine, Green Mountain, Bakersville, & Little Switzerland.
Our smaller communities are often referred to locally as...
Cattail, Relief, Poplar, Egypt Ramseytown, Little Creek, Pigeon Roost, Red Hill, Glen Ayre, Bee Log, Buladean,
Our Rivers that became so overwhelmed by the storm that mostly destruction lays upon their riverbanks include
It will take years to rebuild what has been destroyed
Not only have we been cut off from leaving our hollers, but the water also took out our power & internet cables.
Immediately following the storm, our Mountain Men & Women came out of their homes, grabbed their chainsaws and began to cut their way out of their hollers. One neighbor cutting up the road, another neighbor cutting down the road towards each other so that holler by holler they could get to our neighbors and they could make their way safely out of their home.
Our bridges lay broken in pieces in the rivers they once carried us across.
.
Being unable to leave your home or community because of no road or way out is one of the scariest things you could ever experience. Not many were prepared to stay within their home or on their road for days, much less weeks at a time. With a storm that came with little warning, no one was prepared for the damage and chaos that it would leave in its path. Many were evacuated by helicopter. Most stayed until the Mountain Men & Women cut the path out, with chainsaws and borrowed tractors, the new roads were cut in new paths created.
The water broke everything in its path. It picked up impossible structures and sent them down the river like a washing machine, it ripped open landslides as it rushed down the mountain, taking homes, vehicles, businesses and many lives.
Here at Rebuilding Hollers Foundation, we are committed to standing next to our neighbors thru their rebuilding process.
No matter what the next step is, they can count on us to stand by them to make sure they have exactly what they need for their rebuilding efforts.
